A Mother's Dream
is
Our Mission
Beginnings: Tech-Able began as a dream of Lynn Chiu who sought to build a
center that helped to meet the needs of individuals with
disabilities. The mother of three, her youngest Sandy born with
Cerebral Palsy lead Lynn to develop a place where individuals
could obtain information and resources regarding Assistive
Technology. The hope was to help individuals to meet their
chosen potential and to claim their place in society!
The Center started in a humble warehouse space in Conyers, GA.
Services included providing persons with disabilities, their
families and support professional access to equipment through
the Tech-Able lending library. From simple to complex - from
no-tech to high tech all items were available to those who could
benefit. It was a way to make equipment available to those who
may have trouble finding what they need and who might have
trouble paying for the equipment.
Items that were inaccessible were adapted with help from
Bernie Bourdon; a man with a little bit of Santa spirit - who
could take most any toy and outfit it with handles and switches
and make it possible for all kids to enjoy!
The Dream Continues
Today:
Since Lynn's passing in 1994 Tech-Able has continued to
grow and expand by listening to the community.
The
small but dedicated staff and volunteers of Tech-Able
provide thousands of assistive technology services each year
throughout the state of Georgia and beyond!
By continually seeking collaborations with like focus -
Tech-Able has managed to grow and expand services.
